Adrenal Fatigue

The adrenal glands, which are located over the kidneys, are responsible for the body’s (fight or flight) response. Their job is to regulate the body’s response during times of stress. One way they do this, is by releasing a hormone called Cortisol. This hormone acts as a ‘buffer’ to protect the body from the negative effects of stress. When we do not manage stress properly, the adrenal glands cannot keep up with the extreme demand for this stress hormone. This can ultimately result in a condition known as Adrenal Fatigue.

The adrenal glands don’t just secrete cortisol in response to what we consider to be typical forms of ‘stress’. Low blood sugar, exercise and excitement, which is still a form of ‘stress’ to the body, also plays a role in when cortisol is secreted.

Typically, our levels of Cortisol are the highest in the morning and decrease throughout the day. Adrenal fatigue is evident when the cortisol levels remain low throughout the day, without any rise in levels in response to daily life. These low levels, or adrenal fatigue, not only produce symptoms of their own, but greatly impact the way our body utilizes other hormones.

The stress caused by hormone imbalance, namely perimenopause and menopause, can play a huge factor in adrenal fatigue. Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy balances your hormones which can help with symptoms of adrenal fatigue and the management of stress.
