Methods of Testing

Measuring hormone levels is an important part of Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy. It paints the picture between what you are feeling and where you stand with your hormone levels. We work with ZRT Laboratory for all of the salivary and blood spot testing.

Saliva Testing

Saliva testing is a convenient, inexpensive, and accurate way to evaluate your hormone levels. Saliva testing can be done in the comfort of your own home and then shipped to the lab for analysis. Hormones in saliva are exceptionally stable, and can be stored at room temperature for up to 30 days without affecting the accuracy.

Scientific studies have shown a strong correlation between hormone levels in saliva and the amount of hormone in the blood that is active or ‘bioavailable’. It is the bioavailable levels that are the most important to evaluate when considering Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy. Click here for a fact sheet on saliva testing. Saliva test kits are available at your nearest Schwieterman Pharmacy locations.

Hormones Tested in Saliva Profiles include

  • Estradiol
  • Progesterone
  • Testosterone
  • DHEA
  • Cortisol

Blood Spot Testing

Blood spot testing is another accurate and convenient way to test hormone levels. With only one prick to the finger, many tests can be run from a single sample. This testing provides results comparable with serum blood testing, but without the cost and inconvenience of conventional blood draws. This test is also done in your home with a test kit containing everything you need to conduct the test. Click here for a fact sheet on blood spot testing. Blood Spot test kits are available at your nearest Schwieterman Pharmacy location.

Hormones Tested in Blood Spot Profiles include

  • Estradiol
  • Progesterone
  • Testosterone
  • DHEA
  • Cortisol
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
  • Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPO)
  • Thyroxine, free (T4)
  • Triiodothyronine, free (T3)

Serum Blood Testing

Serum testing is an outpatient procedure done at a healthcare practitioner’s office or lab. It requires an order or prescription, and involves a needle inserted into the vein of the arm. If you are interested in serum testing to attain your hormone levels, please contact your healthcare practitioner’s office directly.
